Writing Contracts That Define Scope

Writing projects start with a brief and end with a deliverable — but everything in between is where disputes happen. Word counts expand, tone-of-voice shifts without notice, and one more round of edits turns into a perpetual revision cycle. A strong writing contract defines exactly what you are delivering, how many revisions are included, and when ownership transfers.

The most important clause for writers is the scope of work definition. It should specify: word count range, number of deliverables (blog posts, white papers, email sequences), tone-of-voice requirements, SEO keyword targets, and the research that is included vs. billed separately. A vague scope like “write website content” is an invitation for the client to ask for six extra pages after delivery.

Content rights transfer is another critical area. Does the client need exclusive rights, or can you repurpose the research for other clients? Our templates include a clear content rights clause: ownership transfers on full payment, but you retain the right to reference the work in your portfolio. For ghostwritten content, additional confidentiality terms can be added.

Whether you write copy, content, or technical documentation, our lawyer-reviewed templates protect your IP, set revision boundaries, and ensure you get paid for every word you write.
